Škoda Scala – Czech automakers answer to the hatchback “giants”.
On December 6th, 2018, Škoda held the official premiere of the new Scala.
The name Scala comes from a Latin word meaning “ladder” and reperesenting Škoda’s next step forward in the compact segment. It is intended to fit between the Fabia and Octavia in the lineup and as a direct competitor to the well known names of Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Opel Astra. The development of the car lasted four years, with the configurator launched earlier this year in January and planned sales starting in April.
Scala is based on the Vision RS concept and is marginally longer and has a larger wheelbase that allows for more legroom. Along with the bigger dimensions Škoda also says the Scala has the largest boot in the segment with a 467 L capacity. Umbrella compartment in the driver’s door, ice scraper in the fuel cap that doubles as a tyre thread depth gauge are just some of the other trademark Škoda touches that are making a return.
All of the engines will be powered either by a five- or six-speed manual or a seven-speed DSG automatic. All models will include a number of “standard” driver assist systems such as lane keep assist and autonomous emergency braking; adaptive cruise control, rear view camera and automatic park assist as optional choices. As for the higher end models, Škoda plans to have options like keyless entry, wireless smartphone charging and remote door unlocking via a mobile app.
As stated, the Scala should go on sale around mid-2019 with prices starting at approximately 19000€ making it considerably cheaper than its rivals in hopes of sparking a fierce rivalry with the Golf and Focus. Czech company owned by the VW Group is well known by offering many high-tech options as standard on their fairly budget cars – and the Scala is no different. Its cabin is equipped with a pair of completely customisable digital screens meaning the driver can see the navigation system in the centre of the instrument cluster if they chose to do so which, at this price point, is unique to Škoda.
