The third generation BMW M3 based on the E46 was first introduced in October 2000 and appeared worldwide with the new 3.2 L S54 M-tuned engine. It was only available as a coupe and convertible since the saloon had been dropped. It was offered with a standard 6-speed Getrag transmission, but optionally came with a SMG drivelogic transmission.
